VULTURE – Over the last several years, Scarlett Johansson’s output has been impressive in its variety: The Avengers, Hitchcock, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway, Don Jon, Her, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Under the Skin. This weekend, she stars in the Luc Besson–directed action movie Lucy as a drug mule who finds herself able to access increasingly large portions of her brain’s capacity. Vulture spoke with Johansson about playing hyperintelligent beings, avoiding her own acting tics, and her favorite sandwich.

The first question I like to ask everyone I interview is: Why this movie now?
Why this movie now? [Laughs.] That’s interesting. When I first met Luc, I was doing a Tennessee Williams play that was visceral and raw and this project seemed so abstract. It was challenging in a different way because the character is in this constant state of transition and struggles to hold onto the nuances of herself and her life that make her who she is — that make her human, in her mind. In comparison to the work that I was doing when we met, it seemed like a totally different challenge. It just fit. I didn’t even know how to do it; I just felt I could.

As the movie goes on, you unlock more and more of your brain, and your performance becomes more muted and less emotional. What is going through your mind in these scenes where you’re having to be so elevated but also so restrained?
There’s so much going on inside of her. She’s having all these profound changes and realizations and these sudden “ah-ha” moments. But you still want to watch the person and see that there’s an inner life happening there. The goal is to not make it a story about revenge and not have the performance be monotonous or robotic. It very well might be. I’m not sure that I succeeded in making it anything else. [Laughs.] I was aware every moment of what her abilities were. I had a big chart. Okay, I’m at 40 percent. This is what I’m holding on to. This is what I know now. This is what I’m capable of. Okay, now I’m at 70 percent, so this is what I’m challenged by. She’s gaining all this ability and knowledge but she’s becoming almost childlike in some ways. That’s how I saw it.

VARIETY – Scarlett Johansson is in talks to join the Coen brothers’ drama “Hail Caesar.”

Jonah Hill is also in talks to join the cast.

She would join Josh Brolin and George Clooney. Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes are also in negotiations to co-star.

Universal will distribute with the Coens producing, along with Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan for Working Title Films.

The story follows a Hollywood fixer in the 1950s who is working to keep a studio’s stars in line.

Johansson will play an actress who suddenly becomes pregnant as her film is about to go into production. It’s a good fit, since Johansson announced in March that she was pregnant. She is engaged to Romain Dauriac.

The plan is to go into production this fall and given the size of the cast, Johansson’s role is not expected to take very long to shoot.

She can be seen next in Universal’s “Lucy” and just wrapped production on Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” She is repped by CAA and LBI Entertainment.

Scarlett’s latest campaign for Dolce & Gabbana was unveiled earlier this week and I have updated the gallery with a number of photos including print ads, behind the scenes photos and screen captures from the commercial itself.

IGN – Black Widow will get around town in Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron on Harley Davidson’s first-ever electric motorcycle, called Project LiveWire.

Scarlett Johansson’s character will ride Project LiveWire in the upcoming Avengers sequel, marking the silver-screen debut for the electric Harley. Leaked footage of the Avengers: Age of Ultron shoot from earlier this year showed Johansson’s stunt double doing work on a motorcycle, which we now know is Project LiveWire.

Johansson is part of a star-studded cast for Avengers: Age of Ultron that also includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Elizabeth Olsen, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner. Joss Whedon is back to direct and script the Marvel blockbuster sequel.

Avengers: Age of Ultron comes to theaters May 1, 2015.

I’ve added a scan from the latest issue of Total Film–which offers a quick look at Scarlett’s upcoming role in Lucy.

I’ve added a high-resolution version of the theatrical poster for Lucy to the gallery. Be sure to take a look!

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – In a late-inning release shuffle, Universal has shifted the opening of this summer’s Luc Besson action movie, Lucy.

The Scarlett Johansson starrer is moving up from Aug. 8 to July 25, 2014.

Reasons for the move were not immediately clear.

The July 25 date is already somewhat crowded. Paramount has Brett Ratner’s Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson, opening while Columbia has the Cameron Diaz-Jason Segel comedy Sex Tape. Lionsgate has Step Up All In, the latest in the Step Up franchise.

Aug. 8 would have seen Lucy going up against Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which has plenty of interest from the younger demographics, potentially the same ones that could go see Lucy. Into the Storm, a 3D tornado disaster movie from New Line poses additional competition. Also opening is the drama The Hundred-Foot Journey, starring Helen Mirren.

THR – Disney is swinging forward with its adaptation of The Jungle Book, with two actresses in the midst of boarding the project being directed by Jon Favreau.

Scarlett Johansson and Lupita Nyong’o are in the middle of negotiations to join the already cast Idris Elba in what is being envisioned as a live-action/CG hybrid movie.

Nyong’o is in final negotiations to play Rakcha, a mother wolf who adopts Mowgli.

Johansson is in earlier stages of talks to voice the character of Kaa, the python who eats other animals by hypnotizing them. Kaa is the movie’s second villain after Shere Khan, the man-eating tiger being voiced by Idris Elba.

The part of Mowgli has not been set yet.

Justin Marks wrote the script for project, which has a release date of October 9, 2015.

Favreau is producing along with Brigham Taylor.

The Disney version of Jungle Book is one of two projects underway. Warner Bros. is developing its own version of the property with Andy Serkis set to direct.

Johansson (CAA, LBI Entertainment, Morris Yorn) is currently shooting Avengers: Age of Ultron and has the Luc Besson action movie Lucy awaiting an August 8 release.

Nyong’o is only now making her first moves since winning a best supporting Oscar for her work in 12 Years a Slave. Earlier this week she joined CAA for representation.

As you’ll no doubt know already, Scarlett is featured on the cover of this month’s Vanity Fair, looking as beautiful as ever. I have now added the photos from her editorial to the gallery.
