Scarlett Johansson Does a Wearable Take on One of Spring’s Biggest Beauty Trends
Christian Allaire
April 11, 2019
Backstage at the Spring runway shows, many top makeup artists approached eyes with the same creative hand: they applied bright, colorful shades onto the lids or as liner, sometimes even carrying through these hues as a highlight shade, too. This electrifying look was seen in many different interpretations: at Rodarte, pastel pinks and teals had a blurred-out finish, while at Saint Laurent it was a cleaner, deeper aureate pigment packed onto lids. Meanwhile, at Area, shimmery purple metallics were glided onto the outer eye and cheekbones, making for a more dramatic finish. No matter the approach, embracing all shades of the rainbow is clearly the season’s best beauty memo.
While the trend is an instant mood-booster, bright eyes can be daunting to incorporate into day-to-day wear. Running an important board meeting in blinding neon eyeliner? Perhaps not. But, when done right, it can make for a transformative end result—and it’s not as hard to pull off as you might think. Take Scarlett Johansson, who just stepped out in a wearable take.
The actress attended a photo call for her new film Avengers: Endgame in London, and she played up the purple shades of her floral dress on her eyes. She wore a deep violet color on her lids, then smoked it out underneath the eye, as well as carrying it through to the inner corners. The key to her success was indeed matching her makeup to her ready-to-wear, resulting in a head-to-toe palette that felt cohesive and vibrant. Given the dramatic eye, she left the rest of the face relatively bare, putting emphasis on glowy skin and adding a pale pink glossy lip.
So the next time you’re feeling bashful about swiping on a primary color? Put down that palette of browns and neutrals and find your favorite spring dress instead—then, match away.
